Son of Berserker

Tasting: July 2, 2015
Style: Stout
Beer #: 769
ABV: 6.9%

Son of Berserker (SOB) is the second running of Midnight Sun’s barrel-aged Russian imperial stout – Berserker. Second runnings are essentially a beer that is made by using the spent grains of a previously brewed high gravity beer. They are also know as “small beers” since the second runnings will produce a lower alcohol version of the original. For the wine lovers, you might compare second runnings with Italian Ripasso wine. Winemakers re-constitute then re-press the grapes used to make massive Amarone wine. Son of Berserker checks in at 6.9%, while it’s big brother, Berserker comes in at 12.7%.

Frankly, I was expecting a watery stout and while it is somewhat watery, the flavor in this thinnish stout is massive roasted grains. Smokey, coffee, some chocolate. I’d call Son of Berserker at 88 points. Now, I’m amped up to crack open the bottle of Berserker in my cellar.
