I’m not a follower of the zodiac, horoscopes or even fortune cookies. To me, they speak in broad terms and maybe once in a while they might have a fleck of truth that resembles our lives. I guess that’s the cynical Scorpio in me. This beer made me think of the Gemini that I know but there’s only one Gemini I really know – my wife. Some of the characteristics attributed to Gemini are: witty, restless, curious, entertaining, energetic, intellectual, optimistic, fickle, conniving and cynical. Fickle certainly jumps out immediately and I can easily say that you can strike conniving, cynical and restless from her list. I also read that Gemini are socially adept with large circles of friends and love to entertain. I can agree with all three. So, do more hits than misses mean anything?
I think this beer doesn’t necessarily take the characteristics of Gemini, rather the fact that Gemini is known as “twins”. The label describes this beer as being a blend of unfiltered pale ale and their Un- Earthly IPA. It looks like robust ale at 9.0% ABV. It’s a seasonal (mid-winter) release, but I just purchased last week. I’ve had the “oaked” version of Un-Earthly and loved it (93 points). This one pours a nice rich orange with a nice sweet fruit aroma. Totally grapefruit, earthy and carmel all in a nice balance, actually leaning on the sweet side. I’d call the bitterness medium and the mouthfeel rich. This is one is right in my wheelhouse – 91 points.
