Tasting: March 18, 2012
Number four from Southern Tier’s five part Black Water Stout Series. This one, obvious by the name, is a coffee stout. I like that they give you the particular stats on the bottle — 10.6% ABV, 25 degrees plato, cascade & columbus hops, jamaican roasted coffee. Should be rich, with ample coffee and hop bitterness. Pours dark, mellow roasted aroma. Funny the first flavor is a grassy hop over very subtle chocolate. It gets this mossy/earthy flavor further into the bottle. Coffee isn’t as strong as I had expected. Nonetheless, a nice sticky and rich mouth feel. The alcohol, is wonderfully concealed. However, the flavors are a bit too mellow. I’ll call it a nice sipping stout and put it at about 86 points.
