Tasting: February 27, 2011
There’s a common thread I’m discovering in the (double) IPAs I’ve been tasting of late. Of course, they are jacked up with hops and I’m left to wonder if the hop resin (like a pine tar) gives the beer a sticky mouthfeel with a toffee/molasses flavor or is it just the malt. I’d compare this to Sierra Nevada’s Hoptimum, Firestone Double Jack and Stone Arrogant Bastard. Un-Earthly IPA is nice in that the oak comes on the finish. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the color as this one is a beautiful and cloudy rust color with a head that dissipates quickly — at 11% alcohol, this bomber left me a bit light-headed. This one is the little step-brother to Stone’s Double Bastard — but I’ll still give it 92 points.
