Speakeasy Scarface
(c)2013 popsonhops

The cold spring season has extended my winter stout/barley wine buying habits. My fridge is well-stocked with hearty ales and despite the fact that the temperature hit 80 degrees today, I’m sitting here with what could be a hefty mid-February type stout. Luckily, a front came through and dropped the temperature a smidgen and I felt a slight chill. I guess my blood thinned out over the last few hours or my mind wanted to set the right environment.

This one is a 9.8% ABV from San Francisco brewer – Speakeasy. Up front, it presents big roasted aromas on the nose and that follows up in my first couple of sips. Nice alcohol warming with some chocolate malts and mild expresso coffee. The highlights here are the rich mouthfeel, smooth carbonation and crisp astringent finish. Lacks a bit in flavor complexity – but this is a straightforward gem. I really like this one a lot – 90 points.
