Tasting: April 24, 2015
Style: Imperial IPA
Beer #: 737
Like a lot of my own inspirations, SS Kentucky was apparently an idea hatched over a beer at last year’s Extreme Beer Fest in Boston. Carton Brewing of Atlantic Highlands, NJ teamed up with Kentucky brewer – Against the Grain, to create the latest wrinkle in Carton Brewing’s “Need a Bigger Boat” series of releases. According to the label notes, the basic recipe was tweaked with the addition of Zythos and Pacific Jade hops while their Kentucky collaborators added smoked pineapple. I’ll note that Against the Grain also brought the familiar characters of illustrator Robby Davis to this can of imperial IPA as well as their own version of this beer.
This four-pack was a gift from my sister. She lives in Atlantic Highlands and she still takes my texts asking here to swing by the brewery for beer.
I’ve heard some mixed reviews on SS Kentucky. Some have said that they got all smoke and no pineapple and some have given me the reverse opinion. Today, someone told me to drink the first half from the can to get the smoke flavor and the other half from a glass to get more of the pineapple. Actually, this trick worked perfectly. It’s definitely two different beers. I think I like the not-so-smokey version from the glass a bit more. I’ll have to settle and put the two together, I’ll peg SS Kentucky at 85 points.
