Tasting: December 14, 2015
Style: IPA with coffee
Beer #: 875
Admittedly, I did not have high expectations for Carton’s latest entry in their “Need a Bigger Boat” series – SS Yirgacheffe. Not sure why, but it seems like the testimony of friends did not do much to bolster those expectations. I got a few “eh, it was alright”. Since tastes vary from person to person, there have been many times when my expectations have been raised by the opinions of others only to be let down. The moral of the story – form your own opinion.
The name struck me and since I’m not a coffee connoisseur I had to look up Yirgacheffe. I’m not surprised but I didn’t know that there were so many websites that dissect coffee’s flavors. Check out the description of Ethiopia’s Yirgacheffe at The Coffee Bean – Yirgacheffe Coffee
After reading the flavor profile of the coffee and its bright lemon notes, I can see why Carton Brewing decided it was good match for an IPA.
To me, SS Yirgacheffe achieves a wonderful balance between an IPA and its infused coffee influences. There is not a battle over which flavor will win. There’s mellow but clear coffee notes and they are not run over by the bitterness of an IPA but rather it is a mellow base beer. Maybe I couldn’t discern it but I didn’t get any bright lemon. I’m glad I did not listen to the naysayers as I enjoyed SS Yirgacheffe. Maybe I can ask these friends if they want to give up their cans. I’ll put SS Yirgacheffe at 91 points
