Tasting: August 22, 2012
Style: IPA (double)
Enjoy by IPA
The label says…”Live for the Now”. Simple advice that we often over look. A beer reminds us that the here and now is fleeting and should be savored. I don’t mean to get cliche, but if you have kids…you get it. My boys will rush me when I walk in the door and say something like…”Daddy, will you play video games with us?”. More often than not, I’ll tell them I need to get some things done…like change my clothes, take out the garbage, clean out the cat box and help with dinner. I feel bad that I can’t live every fun moment with them but it’s a balance of doing the things you want to do and doing the things you have to do. Of course, I sneak in a few nights of xbox with my boys.
The concept of this double IPA is awesome. A fresh hop ale that was bottled in California on Friday, August 17th – that would be available on shelves beginning on Monday, August 20th. Amazingly, I picked up this bottle on Tuesday the 21st. Kudos to the truck drivers and Hunterdon Beverage for getting out so quickly. I particularly like that this first installment of “Enjoy By” was sent to only three markets — their home market in southern California, Chicago and New Jersey. Thanks Stone – I guess we really are worthy.
The thing that is amazing about Enjoy by IPA is that it is full of so much hop flavor and really very little bitterness to speak of on the finish. It really highlights the tropical fruit, floral nature of hops. Don’t get me wrong there is some lingering bitterness that does build – but I think it’s just a result of the massive amount of hops used. Hops are fragile and lose their character over time. I have had a couple of Founders Devil Dancer in the last week – and it certainly isn’t the beer I bought just last month. The hops had dropped out and the malts and hop resin dominate. I understand why they want you to enjoy this one fresh. Just when you expect dark and brooding from Stone – it’s bright and cheery. I love it 94 points.
If you’ll excuse me I have some video games to play.
