Mint Chocolate Imperial Stout
c) 2012 popsonhops
Here’s another collaboration from Stone Brewing — and for the second time they tap home brewer Ken Schmidt for the honor. Schmidt’s “Pillow Mint at the Ritz” earned him the win in the 2012 Stone’s home brewing contest and this stout attempts to bring a minty cool twist to imperial stout. Stone brings in local brewer Iron Fist to participate in the mass production of this unique beer. Reading Stone’s blog on the beer, they comment on the challenges of taking a small scale beer to a grand scale. They used chocolate from a local chocolatier and attempted to use their own freshly grown chocolate mint and spearmint from Stone Farms but fresh mint just doesn’t taste the same as the familiar mint extract, so an acceptable balance was struck. Comes in at 9.6% ABV.
I had one of these last night and was completely taken with the rich creamy flavor. It really tasted as much as a beer could taste like a chocolate chip mint ice cream – totally decadent. I had to go back again tonight and confirm my initial take. Really refreshing to find a stout not dominated with coffee flavors – this is simply chocolate and mint and really nicely balanced. Loved it 93 points.
