You’ll see some beer called “farmhouse” or “saison”. Saison is the French word for “season” and in the beer world, saison is loosely a style reminiscent of the special recipes created on French and Belgian farms for the seasonal laborers. These beers were typically brewed the previous autumn or winter. They were low in ABV because we can assume that drunken farmhands don’t work so hard. These beers were really meant to hydrate since there was a lack of suitable drinking water on the farm. Since these beers were popular in France and in neighboring Belgium, they tend to have a Belgian influence. This black saison is 6.8% ABV – at this strength, I don’t think this farm would be very productive.

This one is a collaboration by Evil Twin, Stillwater and Stone. It pours dark as cola. Right off the bat, easy to confirm that it is of Belgian influence as the yeasty nose follows through on the flavor – clove, spice with roasted grain and subtle smoke. Some oak and moderate bitterness. It’s thin and frankly underwhelming – 77 points.
