Oaked Big Hoppy Monster
(c) 2012 popsonhops
If you call something hop monster – to me, it should be along the lines of Ruination. Something that makes your taste buds cry uncle. I had the first one of these monsters out of a four pack the other day and wasn’t really impressed. It was totally deceiving as it wasn’t really hoppy at all – not bitter, not citrusy, not piney, not spicy – nothing. Okay, so maybe the malt backbone should have been dominating – it wasn’t. You’d expect big charred caramel from a red ale – but it was just subtle caramel buried under some cherry, cheap candy sugar and booze. Was there oak? well, maybe a wisp of earthiness – but here again it fell short.
So, on to take two to see if my tastebuds had an off night. You know it is a totally different experience. The oak is pretty large up front and there is a wave of booziness and some bitter earthy hop, but it falls apart after a few more sips. Totally disjointed and all over the place. It’s just a heavy drink with a mish mash of flavors. My first experience was 79 points my second wasn’t much better so I’ll leave it there.
