The Oracle

Tasting: November 12, 2015
Style: Double IPA
Beer #: 850
ABV: 10%

Missed buying The Oracle last year but I was happy to spy a lone bottle in New York recently. Full disclosure on my part, the bottling date was about three months ago. I assume if it had any fresh hop, it probably has dropped out of the flavor profile. I’m a little disappointed in myself as I usually check dates but I clearly missed it this time. I do get some remnant of dank hops but The Oracle delivers a prominent syrupy caramel, bitter honey and some serious boozy heat. That booziness certainly interferes way too much. I like a barley wine and The Oracle does remind me of the things I like in barley wine so, I’d peg The Oracle at about 88 points.

30th Anniversary

Tasting: November 12, 2015
Style: Stout
Beer #: 851
ABV: 11%

There were no announcements of the arrival of this stout on beer store websites and certainly no commentary about strict limits. 30th Anniversary was not hidden in the back room and I didn’t need to “know a guy” to get a single bottle. I was happy to walk away with four bottles and happy to sample the early returns on this one-time release.

Bell’s 30th anniversary ale delivers a massive smokey charred flavor that is wonderfully balanced by sweet molasses and dark chocolate. 30th Anniversary reminds me a lot of Bell’s Expedition Stout – 93 Points and Dark Horse Plead the Fifth – 95 points. 30th Anniversary Stout by Bell’s is a world class stout – 95 points.
