Trading beer is (at times) difficult because everyone seems to overvalue their trade chips. It’s also challenging because so many people don’t understand the rarity of certain beer or are interested in trading limited shelf life beer like IPA for age-worthy offerings like stout or barleywine. Recently, I was offered three bottles of Fair Maiden which is an IPA readily available Vermont with a total value of about $27. I was asked to send single bottles of Parabola ($20), Sticky Monkey ($18), Sucaba ($20), Double DBA ($16) and two bottles of KBS ($5 each). I had to surmise that this was either a newbie or hmmm…someone figuring that I was a gullible newbie. Anyway, it was worth a laugh.

These two bomber-sized bottles came over in a recent deal with a guy in Chicago. The negotiations went smoothly. I sent him two Heady Toppers, one Supplication, one Almanac Blueberry and one Almanac Strawberry.
He sent me five bomber-sized bottles: one Square Grouper, two Ninja vs. Unicorn and these two Abduction bottles. On each side, about $50 and five bottles changed hands. While I got a larger volume of beer, my trade partner probably got a few more rare ones. Each one of the beers that I included are only available in one or two states and all the Pipeworks beer is only available in Chicago. In the end, I was targeting the Square Grouper and I used some sours purely as trade bait as I don’t like sour beer. I think it was a fair deal.

Toasty Nut Abduction
Tasting: May 29, 2015
Style: Russian Imperial Stout
Beer #: 748

Smooth, creamy and considering the 10.5% alcohol by volume – dangerously drinkable. This is a nice stout but I think they missed their own target. I get very little (if any) of the advertised vanilla, coconut and almond. I certainly get rich chocolate and some toasted flavor but I attribute that to the roasted malt. All in all, don’t expect the periphery flavors but Toasty Nut Abduction shows off a very nice base stout – 91 points.

Raspberry Truffle Abduction
Tasting: May 31, 2015
Style: Russian Imperial Stout
Beer #: 749

I thought I’d like this more than Toasty Nut Abduction but Raspberry Truffle Abduction is a tad bit fizzy, booziness sneaks in a bit more and the raspberry wasn’t as pronounced as I’d hoped (thinking Big Luscious by Founders). Still has nice dark chocolate and roasted flavors. Raspberry Truffle Abduction is just a case of a good beer that should have been excellent – 88 points.
