Bourbon is a distinctively American whiskey product predominately produced in Kentucky. Of all the bourbon produced, 95% come from Kentucky to be exact. To be called bourbon, it must conform to certain criteria. One such requirement is that the bourbon must be made in new, charred oak barrels. Since it’s a one-time use proposition, I guess the barrels were once either discarded or turned to planters. Many attribute Goose Island Bourbon County Stout as the first beer to utilize these used barrels to age beer (more on that one 😉 soon I hope). With bourbon consumption on the rise around the world, many other breweries have followed suit and began to utilize bourbon-barrels to age beer. These beers pick up some interesting qualities from the second hand use, mainly oak and vanilla.

This offering from Uinta is a barley wine aged in bourbon barrels. Cockeyed Cooper, is part of the brewery’s “crooked” series of beer. Each of the original four in the series had been given a title that indicated “an indirect path”. There is Labyrinth, Detour, Tilted and Cockeyed . I thought that was a cool concept but I see that they’ve added Birthday Suit (Sour Cherry Ale) and Jacked (Imperial Pumpkin) to this series. I guess they ran out of synonyms or they forgot what they were doing. Frankly, I don’t see me buying the sour cherry ale or the pumpkin ale so, I’ll wrap up my experience with the crooked series with the core four. As with other labels in the series, the artwork is from local (Utah) artist and the bottle makes a nice presentation with its cork and cage.

Pours a ruddy brown with a rich dark fruit aroma. First sip is also rich in dark fruit like raisins, prunes and definitely some oak and vanilla from the barrel. That’s very easy to pick up. Carbonation is smooth and mouthfeel is nice and sticky. I wish it had a notch more flavor as Cockeyed Cooper seems a bit subdued but I still really like it 88 points.

Some other beer from Uinta’s Crooked Series…
