White Oak Jai Alai

Received two twelve-ounce cans of White Oak Jai Alai as bonus beers in a trade that featured a bottle of 2015 Hunahpu and a bottle of Funky Buddha Maple Bacon Coffee Porter coming back to me. In case you’re curious, I sent a bottle of Eclipse Fifty/Fifty Buffalo Trace, a bottle of barrel-aged Plead the fifth and a Mattina Rossa from Allagash to my trade partner.

It isn’t uncommon to see old fridge cling-ons sent in trades but my trade partner came through with some fresh goodies. I was pleased to see that these two extras were canned just nineteen days ago (6/3/15). I like sending “A+” bonus beers as well and in this particular trade, I sent my partner a regular Plead the 5th, a Sunday Morning Stout and a fresh can of Heady Topper. I’m sure he’ll be pleased as these are very tradable commodities in their own right.

There is a regular version of Jai Alai – follow this link to see my thoughts on the base version (Jai Alai – 92 points) This version ages the base beer on white oak and the label purports that this aging adds vanilla and hints of dill and offers a restrained bitterness.

This White Oak Jai Alai tastes fresh and is full of flavor. Bold citrus, nice tropical fruit. Oak lends a nice earthy touch. I can’t say I get the dill but after my palate adjusts I do surprisingly pick up on some vanilla notes. Bitterness is assertive but doesn’t overpower on the finish. The aged on white oak version of Jai Alai gets 94 points from me. Really enjoyed it and can’t wait to pop open the other can.
