Style: English Style Ale
I’ve been seeing a pretty wide variety of Yard’s ales/beers showing up in my beer haunts over the last few months. I’ve been curious to give a few of them a try — so I picked up a single bottle of Brawler. I figured that the sound of an English style ale is fine by me on a drizzly Saturday night.
Rich brown like you like to see an English ale. Pours to a thin head that vanishes in the blink of an eye. I get roasted malt and some sweetness on the nose like toffee. I get the sweet toffee and some subtle raisin in my first few sips — put a noticeably lacking mouthfeel — very thin and fizzy. Not surprised to see 4.2 % ABV. Really not much flavor on the back end. Really no hop quality. Most might think the english aren’t hop-centric. But you’d be surprised with a few nice bitter ales.
So, in my opinion, if you are looking for a good English ale — bypass the Brawler from of Philadelphia in favor of the real McCoy from England (See Fuller’s or Samuel Smith’s). I’ll have to give this one 72 points.
